Pinellas sacks free sandbags for 2nd consecutive year

Clearwater, FL -- Pinellas County officials say for the second year in a row they will not be handing out free sandbags during the hurricane season. A county spokesperson says sandbags are often ineffective, plus they do not have the staffing to hand them out.

"We need to focus on the important stuff of clearing roads to get fire trucks (thought) and to make sure power can get restored," County Public Communications Specialist Tom Iovino said.

Palm Harbor, Florida -- Palm Harbor residents have a chance to find out if they are ready for hurricane season before our first storm arrives.

The North Pinellas Regional Chamber of Commerce Breakfast for your Brain is featuring a speaker on hurricane preparedness.

The breakfast will be held Wednesday, June 5, from 7:30-9:00 a.m., at Next to Eve's which is located at 3150 Tampa Rd in Oldsmar.

The speaker presentation will be from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Each Saturday beginning at 9 a.m., participants learn about the ecosystems and early residents of Weedon Island Preserve in these two-hour guided hikes. Three high school seniors honored during scholarship awards

Pinellas County, Florida -- The N.O.P.E (Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education) Task Force presented scholarships to three high school students to help cover college costs. 

The NOPE (Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education) Task Force, Pinellas Chapter, recently presented three high school seniors with scholarships during award presentations at Dunedin, East Lake and Largo High Schools. A total of three scholarships were awarded during the ceremonies; one for $1000, one for $750 and one for $500.

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Pinellas County Human Society has a goal: get 999 dogs and cats adopted in three months. 

To kick-off this event, there is a name your price adoption event with a special Preview Party on Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

There will also be games, face painting (for kids), an Ask-A-Trainer booth, and much more. 

The goal is to have 150 cats and dogs find new homes this weekend!

The event will be held at 3040 State Road 590, Clearwater, Florida.
